Adjective agreement

مطابقة الصفة

muṭābaqat aṣ-ṣifa

The adjective follows the noun and copies it — gender, number, and the definite article.الصفة تتبع الموصوف وتطابقه في التعريف والتذكير والعدد.

Rule one — order

English says "a large company"; Arabic says "company large" — شركةٌ كبيرة. The adjective always comes second.الصفة بعد الموصوف دائمًا.

Rule two — it copies the noun المطابقة

Arabic English What matched
فصلٌ كبير a large classroom both indefinite, masculine
الفصلُ الكبير the large classroom both definite
شركةٌ كبيرة a large company both feminine
الشركةُ الكبيرة the large company both definite, feminine
الدروسُ ممتعة the lessons are interesting plural of things → feminine singular
المعلّمون متعاونون the teachers are helpful plural of people → real plural
The commonest slip

If the noun has الـ, the adjective needs الـ too. الفصل كبير means "the classroom IS large" — a different sentence.إذا عُرِّف الموصوف عُرِّفت الصفة، وإلا صارت جملةً خبرية.

Things versus people

This topic is full of both. Lessons, books and subjects are things: الكتب مفيدة. Teachers, students and colleagues are people: الطلاب مجتهدون.الأشياء تُوصف بالمفردة المؤنثة، والعقلاء بالجمع.
