Adjective agreement

مطابقة الصفة

muṭābaqat aṣ-ṣifa

The adjective follows the noun and copies it — gender, number, and the definite article.الصفة تتبع الموصوف وتطابقه في التعريف والتذكير والعدد.

Rule one — order

English says "a large city"; Arabic says "city large" — مدينةٌ كبيرة. The adjective always comes second.الصفة بعد الموصوف دائمًا.

Rule two — it copies the noun المطابقة

Arabic English What matched
بلدٌ جميل a beautiful country both indefinite, masculine
البلدُ الجميل the beautiful country both definite
مدينةٌ كبيرة a large city both feminine
المدينةُ الكبيرة the large city both definite, feminine
خدماتٌ كثيرة many services plural of things → feminine singular
أصدقائي فرنسيون my friends are French plural of people → real plural
The commonest slip

If the noun has الـ, the adjective needs الـ too. المدينة كبيرة means "the city IS large" — a different sentence.إذا عُرِّف الموصوف عُرِّفت الصفة، وإلا صارت جملةً خبرية.

Things versus people

A plural of THINGS takes a feminine singular adjective: المباني حديثة, الخدمات جيدة. A plural of PEOPLE takes a real plural: الطلاب مجتهدون.جمع غير العاقل يوصف بالمفردة المؤنثة، وجمع العاقل بالجمع.
