al-makān wal-jihāt
Two jobs in one: the prepositions that put a thing somewhere, and the compass points that locate a country.وظيفتان: حروفُ الجر التي تحدد الموضع، والجهاتُ التي تحدد البلد.

في شمال أفريقيا means inside North Africa. إلى الشمال من مصر means outside Egypt, to its north. The exam tests exactly this difference.«في شمال» داخل المكان، و«إلى الشمال من» خارجه.
