al-aʿdād wa-waḥadāt al-qiyās
Arabic counts in three bands, and the noun changes shape in each. This is the single trickiest point in the topic.يُعدّ في العربية على ثلاث درجات، ويتغير المعدود في كلٍّ منها.
| Count | Form of the noun | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | dual, no number word | متران | two metres |
| 3–10 | plural | خمسةُ أمتار | five metres |
| 11+ | singular with a fatḥa | خمسون مترًا | fifty metres |
Writing اثنان متر for "two metres". Arabic uses the dual instead: متران. No number word is needed at all.لا يُقال «اثنان متر»؛ بل «متران» بالمثنى.
كم is always followed by a singular noun with a fatḥa: كم مترًا؟ كم كيلوغرامًا؟يأتي بعد «كم» مفردٌ منصوب.
