Dual & plural

المثنى والجمع

al-muthannā wal-jamʿ

Arabic counts one, two, and many — three forms, not two. The dual is the one English speakers forget.العربية تعدّ: واحد، واثنان، وجمع؛ والمثنى هو ما يُنسى غالبًا.

The dual

For exactly two, add ـان: أخ → أخوان, أخت → أختان, غرفة → غرفتان. You never say "two" plus a plural.للمثنى تُضاف «ان»: أخ ← أخوان.

One, two, many المفرد والمثنى والجمع

One Two Many English
أخ أخوان إخوة brother
أخت أختان أخوات sister
صديق صديقان أصدقاء friend
غرفة غرفتان غرف room
كتاب كتابان كتب book
لون لونان ألوان colour
حقيبة حقيبتان حقائب bag
هواية هوايتان هوايات hobby
Three kinds of plural

Sound feminine adds ـات (هوايات). Sound masculine adds ـون (مُعلِّمون). Broken plurals rearrange the letters (كتاب → كتب) and are the commonest.جمع مؤنث سالم، وجمع مذكر سالم، وجمع تكسير — وهو الأكثر.
